Lavrov noted that recently the topic of cybersecurity has become particularly relevant against the backdrop of accusations against Russia about the impact on the electoral process during the 2016 US presidential election.

“This is a very hot topic ... it has escalated significantly with attempts, including to blame Russia for hacking American resources in the context of the presidential election,” the Russian minister said.

He emphasized that although the allegations were unsubstantiated, "this myth continues to circulate in the American and Western media."

At the same time, according to Lavrov, Russia has more compelling reasons for claims against Western countries regarding the issue of cyber threats.

“We also have reasons, more solid, that our Western colleagues show increased attention to our Internet resources, this has repeatedly manifested itself, representatives of the Central Bank of Russia, Sberbank and other government agencies spoke about this,” the Russian Foreign Minister said.

He also said that Russia has repeatedly invited Western countries to organize special working groups to consider such claims.

At the end of July, the Senate Intelligence Committee of the US Congress recommended refraining from introducing electronic voting in the election amid an investigation into "Russian interference."

The Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly noted the absence in the report of the former US special prosecutor Robert Muller of evidence attributed to Russia interference in the US election.
