2018 - Marine biologist Antje Boetius from the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven and wastewater researchers from the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research Leipzig share the German Environmental Award. He is endowed with 500,000 euros.

2011 - The extreme mountaineer Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner reaches the summit of the 8611 meter high K2. This makes the Austrian the first woman to conquer all 14 eight-thousanders without additional oxygen.

1999 - Ten years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Germany is governed again from Berlin. Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD) and his cabinet are taking up work on the new parliament and government seat.
