The Israeli army said it intercepted a rocket fired by Palestinians from Gaza in southern Israel on Friday night, the first such attack in more than a month.

In a statement, the army said the projectile was intercepted by the "Iron Dome" missile defense system, after sirens sounded in and around Sderot, a city in southern Israel.

An army spokesman said it was the first shot since July 12.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza said in a statement earlier that 32 Palestinians had been injured in weekly demonstrations by live Israeli fire on the border fence that separates the Palestinian enclave from Israel.

An Israeli army spokeswoman told AFP that some 5,600 people had protested along the border, some throwing hand grenades and explosive devices at soldiers trying to reach the fence. security.

She said the troops responded with "riot dispersal means", but she was not aware of the use of live ammunition.

Since March 2018, the Gaza Strip has been the scene along the border fence with Israel weekly protests usually accompanied by violence, including demanding the lifting of the strict Israeli blockade imposed for over ten years to the enclave.

Since then, at least 302 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli gunfire, the vast majority of them in clashes with these rallies. Others died in Israeli strikes in retaliation for hostile acts from the enclave.

Seven Israelis were also killed in the violence.

The protests have been less significant in recent months since a truce between Israel and Hamas was concluded under the auspices of Egypt and the UN.

Hamas and Israel have fought three wars since 2008.
