Israeli Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, said that US President Donald Trump would sign a resolution recognizing Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights during a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday in Washington.

"President Trump will sign tomorrow with Prime Minister Netanyahu a resolution recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights," Katz wrote yesterday, on Twitter.

Trump said Thursday that the United States should recognize Israeli sovereignty over the strategically located plateau occupied by Israel during the 1967 war.

The US president did not say whether he would really do so or when he would take a concrete step to translate his position.

The Israeli prime minister has long sought recognition, and analysts saw Trump's Twitter statement as a gift to Netanyahu's election campaign ahead of the April 9 Israeli elections.

Netanyahu faces a tough battle against the centrist "white and blue" coalition led by former Israeli chief of staff Benny Gantz and former finance minister Yair Lapid.

Syria and other countries in the region have condemned Trump's pledge as a violation of international law. France adopted the same position.

Israel annexed the Golan in 1981, a move not recognized by the international community.

Trump had already admitted to Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in December 2017 before the US embassy in Tel Aviv was moved to Tel Aviv in May 2018.
