With a new legislative initiative, Interior Minister Horst Seehofer wants to allow the authorities to detain rejected asylum seekers until the time of their deportation. With this, the CSU politician apparently wants to prevent asylum seekers from disappearing before being deported.

"If someone is to be deported, we should take him into custody, so he did not disappear at the time of deportation," said Seehofer the "Passauer Neue Presse". According to him, he wants to present to the coalition at the beginning of next year "a whole bundle of measures" which grants the authorities corresponding rights.

In addition, the outgoing CSU chairman wants to improve communication between the federal states in order to bundle information about offenses committed by asylum seekers. "We must use every opportunity to return rejected asylum seekers back to their countries of origin, especially if they have committed a crime here," Seehofer said.

According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, nearly 20,000 people were deported from Germany in 2018. This means that the number is at a similar level to the previous year. 14,491 deportations had been canceled before the day of deportation, 5788 had failed because of an "unsuccessful supply on the day of the flight".
