Argentina lost to Venezuela 3-1 in their friendly against Wanda Metropolitano in Spain as part of their preparations for the Copa America.

The match marked the first appearance of Lionel Messi in Argentina since his country's World Cup bid farewell to Russia last summer, but failed to lead the tango against Venezuela and failed to reach the World Cup.

Venezuela ended the first half with two straight goals from Jose Solomon Rondon and John Morello in the sixth and 44th minutes.

In the second half, Luatro Martínez scored the only goal of the Argentine team in the 53rd minute, before Joseph Martinez scored the third goal of Venezuela in the 76th minute of a penalty.

The Argentine side are due to play another friendly against their Moroccan counterpart on Tuesday.

Friday's match came as the preparations for the Copa America, where Argentina play in Group B with Colombia, Paraguay and Qatar, while Venezuela play in Group A with Peru, Brazil and Bolivia.
