Czech Foreign Minister Tomas Petrichek has announced that his country will summon a diplomat from its embassy in Riyadh in response to the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

"The Czech Republic will respond by calling one of its diplomats from our embassy in Riyadh," Petrishik told a news conference in Prague on Wednesday.

"We consider that any attack on journalists is unacceptable, and no free society can exist without independent media," he added after summoning the Saudi ambassador to his country Naif al-Aboud.

"The death of Jamal Khashoggi can not be justified at the consulate of Saudi Arabia," he said, adding that Prague would "monitor the investigation thoroughly."

Asked about possible additional measures against Riyadh, the minister said his country would move "in close cooperation with its partners in the European Union, and we will see how Saudi Arabia will hold the culprits accountable."

The Czech foreign ministry said 10 diplomats were currently working at the Czech embassy in Riyadh, and a ministry spokesman said an official in charge of agricultural affairs would leave the embassy.
