The Israeli army claimed in a statement that "riots were thrown at the stones, was shot at his forces at the security fence adjacent to the Gaza Strip, and lightly wounded an Israeli soldier, when a bullet hit his helmet." The statement said the wounded man was an officer and was taken to hospital.

"In response, an IDF tank shelled a Hamas military checkpoint in the Gaza Strip," he said.

The Israeli shelling targeted a monitoring post belonging to the Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas movement in the northern Gaza Strip, which also caused material damage.
