The police in the Netherlands have taken another suspect into custody in connection with the fatal shootings in Utrecht. It is about a 40-year-old man from Utrecht, said the prosecutor. The man had already been arrested by a special police unit in the afternoon. Details of the suspicion against the man called the prosecutor not.

The main suspect is a 37-year-old, who was arrested on Monday evening after hours of search. He is said to have shot three people in a tram on Monday and seriously injured three others.

Two other men, who had been arrested on Monday, have since been released from custody, according to the prosecution. They are no longer suspected.

The motive of the alleged shooter is still unclear. The police do not exclude that there was a terrorist motive for the act. The finding of a letter in the suspect's escape vehicle speaks in favor of this theory. But also a personal motive is examined.

It is clear that the main suspect, the Turkish-born Gökmen T., has a long criminal history record. "We know a lot about him," said Rutker Jeuken of the Interior Ministry. In December 2013, he was convicted of attempted manslaughter, and two weeks ago began a trial for a rape allegation. He was also charged with shoplifting, drunk driving, property damage and insult.

Many citizens of Utrecht have planted flowers for the victims at the crime scene, including Mayor Jan van Zanen. The shots killed a 19-year-old woman from Vianen and two men aged 28 and 49 from Utrecht. In addition, three people were seriously injured: a 20-year-old woman from Utrecht, a 74-year-old man from De Meern and a 21-year-old woman from Nieuwegein. Four people suffered slight injuries, for example, they rushed in the rush immediately after the crime.
