More than two years after a death drive through downtown Melbourne, a 29-year-old Australian has been sentenced to life imprisonment. A jury jury had already convicted the man in November for sixfold murder.

Now the sentence was announced. Accordingly, the amok driver must be in prison for at least 46 years, until 2065 he can apply for parole.

Judge Mark Weinberg described the crime as one of the "worst examples of mass murder" in Australia. The defense lawyers had argued that the man had suffered a drug-induced psychosis at the time of the crime, the Australian news broadcaster ABC News reported. Weinberg rejected this. He knew what he was doing, the judge said, according to ABC News.

The man was raced in a stolen car in January 2017 through the popular shopping street Bourke Street, which is actually closed to cars. He killed six people, including a child only three months old. 27 other people were injured.
