In Hong Kong, a tourist has been killed by a falling hotel window. The window had fallen from the 16th floor of a hotel in the popular shopping district of Tsim Sha Tsui, the police said. A 24-year-old Chinese woman was met and succumbed to her injuries shortly afterwards. Her companion suffered only minor injuries.

The police temporarily detained a hotel cleaner. A little later she was released on bail, the investigation continues.

According to the police, the hotel window could only be opened by employees with a special key. "We think the cleaner tried to open the window," a policewoman said. The window was probably dropped "immediately" after opening.

The incident occurred at the Hotel Mira. The hotel hit the headlines in 2013 because former US intelligence official Edward Snowden was staying there after settling on secret documents about US global surveillance programs.

The hotel announced, according to media reports, to cooperate in clarifying the incident with the authorities.
