A wolf has been spotted in the north of Halle. The State Office for Environmental Protection announced on Thursday that the first report was received on Wednesday morning. As the day progressed, additional eyewitnesses came forward. Accordingly, the animal was filmed crossing the tracks at the Saalestadt freight station.

Experts said they found no further evidence at the sighting sites. The animal was identified as a wolf via the video shot, which was also said to have been shared on the Internet. It was described as fearful and searching, quickly retreated when it noticed people and did not show any aggressive behavior.

The wolf has now “almost likely” left the city, the office said. It is rare for the animals to go into inhabited areas.

If people encounter a wolf in or outside of town, the State Office for Environmental Protection advises not to approach the animal, lure it or feed it.

It's best to stop for a moment - whether you're cycling or walking. This gives the animal the opportunity to notice people and retreat in peace. If you feel uncomfortable or afraid, you can also shout loudly or clap your hands.
