An exceptional course in hybrid exhibitions

Sharjah International Book, a gateway to the recovery of the publishing market

Ahmed Al-Ameri: We send a message to the world confirming that societies' need for knowledge is genuine and never ending.

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, laid the foundation stone for the launch of the Sharjah International Book Fair in early 1982, which quickly transformed from a Gulf-Arab event into an international cultural event, around which a group of writers, thinkers and workers gathered annually. In the field of culture, the book is dedicated as a development engine and the first pillar for building societies.

And here it is today, the day after tomorrow, in an exceptional session that offers a pioneering experience in hybrid exhibitions around the world. All the activities accompanying its 39th session (remotely) are held through an innovative platform launched by the Sharjah Book Authority under the title “Sharjah Reads”, while publishers from different countries are exhibiting The world is new to their publications at the Expo Center Sharjah in an environment that adheres to the highest precautionary measures to protect visitors and publishers from the spread of the Coronavirus.

The head of the Sharjah Book Authority, Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, said that the Emirate of Sharjah, through organizing the exhibition, directed a message to the world confirming that the cultural act exists, and that the societies ’need for knowledge is an authentic and unending need.

Al-Amiri added: Through this exceptional session of the exhibition, we present a pioneering model for hybrid exhibitions in the world, which are held on the ground and through virtual communication platforms, where we have succeeded in employing the latest technical options to hold all the events accompanying the exhibition (remotely), and we took advantage of their capabilities to address the book audience. And knowledge, not only a resident or visitor in the country, but also the public from different countries of the world, which makes us proud today to develop a new experience for organizing exhibitions not during the Corona period, but in the future as a whole.

The exhibition leads annually a qualitative movement to enhance the cultural reality and support book makers in the region, as it is an international platform for the publishing sector and one of the three largest exhibitions in the world, and its impact doubles this year due to the support it provides to Emirati and Arab publishers in light of the current conditions that have witnessed the suspension and cancellation of many book fairs in the Arab world. Globally, the exhibition is the first at the international level to be held during the pandemic period.

Annually, the exhibition leads a specific movement to enhance cultural reality.
