A scientific breakthrough that represents real hope in the treatment of pancreatic cancer, one of the most aggressive cancers.

Marseille researchers have identified the “molecular signature” of the tumor to offer the patient the most suitable treatment, and therefore the most effective possible.

"The difference in the behavior of tumors is due to molecular expressions: even if they have the same skin color, inside they are very different", explains to AFP Dr. Juan Iovanna, specialist of the Research Center in Cancerology of Marseille (CRCM), which is leading this study promoted by the Paoli-Calmettes Institute (IPC) in Marseille, in collaboration with bioinformaticians from the League against cancer.

Avoid giving unnecessary treatments

“Before starting any treatment for cancer, a biopsy is done in which 200 cells are removed,” recalls Dr. Iovanna.

By studying them, we identified signatures (called Pancreatic adenocarcinoma molecular gradient) which determine the prognosis of patients, which say whether or not they will respond to a particular treatment ”.

“When you give a patient an effective medicine directly, you avoid giving them unnecessary treatments and you give them a chance to live longer,” concludes Dr. Iovonna, especially since, in the face of pancreatic cancer, “ there are few possibilities ”.
