  • The city of Cannes has mandated Universcience to lead the creation project of its future cinema museum.

  • Preparatory studies have been launched for a budget of one million euros.

We now know a little more about the future “great international museum of cinema and the Cannes Film Festival”.

The city hall has specified the contours of the project and in particular the date scheduled for its opening: in the course of 2025, if all goes well.

By this deadline, the municipality has chosen a partner to support it in "cultural, technical, economic and legal operations".

And it will be Universcience, which oversees, in Paris, the Palais de la Découverte as well as the City of Science and Industry.

The location has however still not been confirmed even if the site which adjoins MJC Picaud, near the sea, seems to hold the rope.

Preparatory studies for one million euros

After several years of missed opportunities and aborted projects, the file is well and truly on track.

"The project is moving forward, in conjunction with the Ministry of Culture and the CNC," confirms Mayor LR David Lisnard.

"The choice of Universcience as assistant to the contracting authority reflects the ambition to endow France and Europe, here in Cannes, with a large international museum around cinematographic art", he says.

The municipality will invest one million euros in preparatory studies "in order to guarantee a perfect methodology", she specifies.

By commissioning "the first national public institution for the dissemination of scientific culture" (associated with consulting and architectural firms), it hopes to see "strategic and innovative" equipment emerge from the ground.

And above all original.

in June 2019, the town hall included in its specifications a “fun and educational” concept offering “an immersive and original approach”.

This week, she said she wanted to place the visitor "at the heart of the process of creation, production and distribution of cinematographic works".

A festival and special effects museum

On the content side, Universcience and the "scientific and cultural committee" formed by the city with "experts" (including the general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival Thierry Frémaux) will have to work on five axes, we still detail on the side of the municipality .

The international cinema museum will be that of the Cannes Film Festival, to which it will be partly dedicated.

Much space will also be given to “special effects and new technologies”.

The place will have a “conference and exhibition space backed by a projection room”.

Finally, it will host a pavilion on "the history of world cinema" and also "a space for companies linked to cinema".
