Fukui Takahama Nuclear Power Plant Tsunami countermeasures for submarine landslides are appropriate Nuclear Regulatory Commission October 14, 17:04

Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. has summarized that the Takahama Nuclear Power Station in Fukui Prefecture will close the tide gate when it senses a change in the tide level that exceeds the standard over the tsunami caused by a landslide on the seabed, which is said to be difficult to announce a tsunami warning. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission evaluated the response as appropriate.

Takahama Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 and 4 have a special shape where the intake of the waterway that takes in the seawater necessary for cooling the reactor is near the sea surface, so if a tsunami warning is issued due to an earthquake, it will be installed in the waterway. I am going to close the tide gate.

However, if a landslide occurs on the seabed near the Oki Trough in the Sea of Japan and a tsunami occurs, it will be difficult to issue a tsunami warning, and Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. has found that it is difficult to issue a tsunami warning. He reported that if the total water level fluctuates beyond the standard, the reactor will be shut down and the tide gate will be closed.

On the 14th, the Regulatory Commission concluded that Kansai Electric Power's response was appropriate.

Regarding the tsunami that may not be announced as a tsunami warning, the Regulatory Commission has stated that no additional measures are required for nuclear power plants other than the Takahama nuclear power plant due to the structure of the intake.

Approved measures to prevent recurrence of piping damage at Unit 3

On the other hand, due to the problem that a scratch was found on the thin pipe of the "steam generator" at Takahama Nuclear Power Station Unit 3, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved the recurrence prevention measures indicated by Kansai Electric Power.

As a result, it is expected that Unit 3 will be able to resume operation after December once the anti-terrorism facility is completed.

This problem was found during a regular inspection at Takahama Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 in January, when two thin pipes of the "steam generator" were found to have been scraped to a maximum depth of 56%. Kansai Electric Power's survey results were reported at the held Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Regarding the cause, Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. explained that a minute metal piece adhering to the workers at the site was mixed in the "steam generator" and was washed away by water, damaging the piping, and then it was taken before work as a recurrence prevention measure. We decided to take measures to prevent foreign matter from being brought into the field by changing clothes and putting a cover on the shoes.

In response, Chairman Fuketa said, "It's a management issue rather than a design issue. It's all about not bringing in foreign substances." As a regulatory committee, Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. approved the investigation contents and recurrence prevention measures. ..

The Takahama Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 has not completed the anti-terrorism facility that the government requires to install, so regular inspections are still ongoing, but with the approval of recurrence prevention measures, the anti-terrorism facility has been completed. It is expected that the operation will be resumed after December.
