A man dies after consuming licorice candy daily for a few weeks

An American construction worker’s love for licorice ended with his death.

Where doctors reported that eating a bag and a half of sweets daily for a few weeks caused his heart to stop.

According to the British newspaper "The Guardian", the 54-year-old man suddenly collapsed while eating lunch at a fast food restaurant to be rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Upon examination, doctors found that he was suffering from a serious lack of potassium, which caused serious heart problems for him.

He was given CPR to wake up and tell the doctors that he consumed a bag and a half of candy daily for several weeks.

The next day the man died.

"Eating a small amount of licorice can increase blood pressure a little," said Dr. Neil Potala, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Potala pointed out that the problem lies in the glyceric acid found in licorice, as it can cause a dangerous decrease in potassium and imbalances in other minerals.

And the US Food and Drug Administration has warned that eating a small amount of licorice daily for two weeks can cause a heart rhythm problem, especially for people over the age of 40.
