The trial of the 14 people suspected of involvement in the 2015 terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo began in Paris in early September.

In connection with the publication of the magazine again a number of controversial caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad - which triggered major protests.

The author and former Charlie Hebdo contributor Marie Darrieussecq tells SVT that the ongoing trial entails a new danger for the editorial staff.

She says that they receive death threats every day.

On Friday, the circumstances surrounding the knife attack outside the editorial office's previous premises are still unclear.

But according to Marie Darrieussecq, Charlie Hebdo is prepared for something new to happen.

- The ongoing trial means that the level of risk is particularly high at present.

I'm not a bit surprised that this is happening, she says.

Rebellion from journalists

Recently, 100 French media organizations have signed an open letter in support of freedom of expression, which they believe is threatened after all death threats.

Due to the threats, the editorial staff is now working in a bunker.

The new workplace became too much for Marie Darrieussecq who no longer works at the time shifts.

- I could not get used to the bunker, I became very claustrophobic.

I really admire those who are left.

It is a scandal that a time shift today, in a democracy, needs work under such conditions, says Marie Darrieussecq.

Is freedom of expression threatened in France today?

- I do not know.

I just know that sometimes I do not dare to say certain things, says Marie Darrieussecq.
