- We dedicate tonight's gala to a man whose soul has touched so many. He is a true hero, not only on the white canvas, but in everything he did. He affected many people's lives forever, said the evening's host, actor Keke Palmer.

- His talent and passion is a true inspiration for all fans who were touched by him, and to everyone he met.

The gala showed clips from Boseman's career and from the music channel's film gala 2018, where Boseman won the award for best hero, for the film "Black Panther". In his acceptance speech, Boseman paid tribute to the heroes of reality and gave away his statuette to James Shaw Jr., who wrestled down a shooter at a waffle restaurant and probably prevented at least four people from being killed.

Chadwick Boseman died last Friday in the suites of colon cancer. He turned 43 years old.

Lady Gaga praised

The gala was held like so many other events this year mainly via video link.

Artists such as Ariana Grande and the Black Eyed Peas performed in different places, but without an audience, and Miley Cyrus offered her new single, "Midnight sky". As a nod to the giant hit "Wrecking ball", Cyrus performed his new song sitting on a large disco ball.

Canadian rapper The Weeknd also performed, and shortly afterwards he won the gala's biggest prize - video of the year - for the song "Blinding lights".

Most of the big prizes, however, came from Lady Gaga.

The singer, who changed clothes for each performance, took home the awards for both artist of the year and song of the year. She received the latter award together with Ariana Grande for the duet "Rain on me", which was also nominated for this year's collaboration.

Quarantine prices

Grande also won an award for his collaboration with Justin Bieber, with the song "Stuck with U" - for best video recorded at home. That prize, as well as the similarly best quarantine performance, are prizes the channel hopes to avoid handing out next year as well.

The k-pop group BTS could also feel like a winner. The group is now the holder of the statuettes for, among other things, this year's group and this year's pop song with "On", which was also named this year's k-pop song.
