The Nankai Trough “Special Change Not Observed” Review Meeting Viewed 19:26, August 7

The regular study group, which evaluates the possibility of a huge earthquake in the Nankai Trough, summarized the view that "no particular change has been observed."

A study group made by experts held a regular meeting by exchanging documents due to the influence of the new coronavirus and analyzed the data.

In the hypocenter of the Nankai Trough and its surroundings, from the Tokai to the northern part of the Kii Peninsula from June 29 to last month 14 and in the eastern part of Shikoku to the western part of Shikoku from last month 22 to the present, the epicenter is near the border of the plate. Small-scale earthquakes called "low-frequency earthquakes" have been observed.

Along with this, a small amount of crustal movement was observed on multiple "strain gauges" around the area.

This is thought to be due to the "short-term slow slip", in which the boundary of the plate deep in the hypocenter region moves slowly over a relatively short period.

Also, since last year, crustal movements have been continuously observed in central Shikoku and the Shima Peninsula, and the boundaries of the plates move slowly on an annual basis.

Since both phenomena have been repeatedly observed, the study group states that "there is no particular change in the probability of occurrence of a large-scale earthquake that is considered to have increased relative to normal times". I have summarized my views.
