A great journey from 1908 to the 60s

“It's an exhibition that invites you on a great trip. It begins in 1908 at a time when Picasso is in the midst of Cubist research and ends in the 1960s when the theme begins to run out of steam, "explains Sylvie Ramond, the director of the establishment. Originally: the desire to collect three Picasso paintings. “We already had Women sitting on the beach in our collections , which had been bequeathed to us by Jacqueline Delubac. We wanted to bring together the two works that complete the triptych, she continues. From there, we thought it would be interesting to work on the theme of bathers and see if it could link all of Picasso's work ”.

150 paintings, sculptures, drawings by the painter were thus brought together to constitute this exhibition with a unique theme. "At the beginning, when I announced this project, I was told" Another Picasso exhibition ", confesses Sylvie Ramond with a smile. But in fact, she takes a very original and original look at her career. She offers to watch another Picasso ”. A Picasso far removed from the Guernica period, for example.

From masters to influenced artists

“We absolutely wanted the exhibition to be punctuated by counterpoints. There are those who influenced Picasso but there is a focus on two artists: Francis Bacon, who will discover Picasso in 1927 and thereby his vocation as an artist, and the sculptor Henry Moore, who in turn inspired by Picasso bathers, ”adds Sylvie Ramond. A nod also to Nanas by Niki Saint Phalle. "Without wanting to multiply the references, we wanted to show how this theme has been received by today's artists," concludes the director of the museum. The exhibition will be visible until January 3, 2021.
