• Literature.JK Rowling, the fall of an acclaimed writer harassed by the 'new censorship'

"For the past 23 years, at Left Bank Books we have read, recommended, sold, and celebrated JK Rowling's Harry Potter series . " But that is over. This St. Louis (Missouri, USA) bookstore, Left Bank Books, will stop trading JK Rowling's books for her "hurtful" opinion of the trans community : "Your public comments on transgender people, particularly transgender women , they are atrocious, hurtful and deliberately ignorant . "

Those "comments" refer to statements by JK Rowling where she affirms, as they understand from Left Bank Books, that only women can menstruate . A few words that "degrade" trans people.

The bookstore has communicated the decision through its twitter account. In a post they have clarified that withdrawing the books of the renowned British writer " will not do anything to stop her transphobia ", but that, at least, the initiative will serve so that "our staff and transgender clients" do not feel singled out.

The goal is, and this has been defended by one of the owners, Jarek Steele, in a statement, that trans people are not "dehumanized" : "We loved their stories. And yet, here we are in a world turned upside down where the person who wrote stories that were true inclusive and affirmative community celebrations degrades the very people who read them . "

JK Rowling, transphobic?

The controversy began in early June on twitter. JK Rowling laid out her ideas on the concepts of 'gender' and 'sex' and some users rebuked her for alleged support for the TERF (Radical Trans-Excluding Feminist, in Spanish) movement: an acronym used to describe those who exclude transgender women of feminism for not considering them women.

JK Rowling defended herself by assuming that speaking of 'sex' as "real" does not mean defending "hate speech."
