It was originally scheduled to start in September. The experimentation with therapeutic cannabis in France, which should concern around 3,000 patients for two years, is postponed "at the latest in January", said this Wednesday from the Agence du Médicament (ANSM). Despite this postponement, due to the mobilization required by the Covid-19, work for its next installation has continued, she said.

The latter relate in particular to the design of the national electronic register for monitoring patients included in the experiment and to the specifications for the selection of future suppliers and distributors of the cannabis-based medicines that will be used. But also on the development of the training platform for health professionals, which must be operational in December and on the list of volunteer expert centers which will include patients.

Patients with serious illnesses

The deputies gave the end of October 2019 the green light to this experiment of cannabis for medical use. It must concern patients who suffer from serious illnesses: certain forms of epilepsy, neuropathic pain, side effects of chemotherapy, palliative care or multiple sclerosis. The experiment will be carried out in several hospital centers, in particular in reference centers for the pathologies concerned.

Patients will use cannabis in the form of oil or dried flowers. They will be prescribed "as a last resort", that is to say in the event of failure of the other existing treatments to treat them, had indicated in January the deputy director general of the ANSM, Christelle Ratignier-Carbonneil. The initial prescription will be made by a specialist doctor, neurologist or pain doctor in particular. Patients must first obtain supplies from a hospital pharmacy and then be able to renew their treatments at a city pharmacy.
