Director Christopher Nolan - Loic Thebaud / Panoramic / Starface

Christopher Nolan sounds the alarm. The director of Dark Knight and Dunkirk has signed a column in the Washington Post , where he calls on the United States government to develop an emergency plan to help cinemas, badly affected by the coronavirus crisis.

“When people think of cinema, they immediately imagine stars, studios, glamor. But the film industry includes everyone: the people who work in the theaters, who operate all the equipment, who take the tickets, help you book the movies, sell advertising or clean the toilets in your cinema neighborhood, "he recalls.

And to add: “The cinemas are an essential element of our social life, which give work to many people and entertainment for everyone. As a director, my work could never be complete without these workers and all the people they welcome, ”writes the filmmaker.

Be together

Hence the need, according to Christophe Nolan, to urgently put in place a rescue plan for an industry that generates about 35 million dollars each year in the United States. “When this crisis is over, our need to live, to love, to laugh and to cry together will be more powerful than ever (…) You may have thought that we were going to the cinema for surround sound, for sweets, popcorn or the stars, but that's not it. We are going there to be together, ”he concluded.

Especially since the crisis is likely to extend beyond the closure of cinemas. Some of the most anticipated blockbusters of the year, whose release was vital for certain theaters, such as Black Widow or the last James Bond, Dying Can Wait , have seen their releases postponed, sometimes by a year.
