The animal protection association points to breaches of the regulations in force in a slaughterhouse in Dordogne. - Association L214

  • The L214 association is broadcasting a new video shot in a slaughterhouse in Dordogne where we see calves regaining consciousness after having been theoretically stunned.
  • She requested the emergency administrative closure of the establishment and filed a complaint against the slaughterhouse for serious animal abuse.

The new videos on animal suffering from the L214 association, released this Thursday, were filmed between November and December 2019 at Sobeval, one of the largest calf slaughterhouses in France, located in Boulazac in the Dordogne. On this installation, owned by the Dutch group Van Drie, world leader in calf meat, 700 animals are slaughtered per day.

"This time in this modern slaughterhouse we expected things to be more square but not at all ..." notes Sébastien Arsac, spokesperson for the L214 association. Didier Guillaume, Minister of Agriculture, had shut down the Boischaut slaughterhouse, located in Indre, and this time we can say that the situation is even worse ”. The association requests the administrative closure of the establishment as a matter of urgency and has filed a complaint against the slaughterhouse for serious animal abuse. "We will hand over six hours of video to justice," said the spokesman.

Regulatory violations

On the images, which are difficult to see, we can see what the association considers to be breaches of the regulations: beasts that regain consciousness after having been theoretically stunned, calves that regurgitate on the slaughter line or signs of conscience after ritual slaughter.

These are groups of local residents opposed to the installation of intensive breeding at their home who came into contact with the association and directed it towards this slaughterhouse in which seven days of filming took place. This is the first time that L214 has visited the facilities of Van Drie, a heavyweight in the veal sector.

"In the regulations, there is a stunning principle with an exemption for ritual slaughter (halal meat and kosher exported respectively to Egypt and Israel) but the animals must then be placed in a barrel of immobilization until loss of conscience, specifies Sébastien Arsac. And before releasing them it is necessary to make sure of their insensitivity (by controlling the corneal reflex, head readings etc.). "

But for the animal protection association, the offenses concern all types of slaughter, that with prior stunning not respecting the procedures either. To use the pneumatic pistol with a piercing rod which stuns the animal, its head must be maintained so that the employee of the slaughterhouse aims at a specific place. "But the chin rests are never put, the blows are not carried out where it should be and the suffering is there all the time ...", sighs the spokesperson of L214.

The calves slaughtered in this structure are marketed under several quality signs (Label Rouge, organic, Saveurs du Périgord etc.) for which there is no obligation for the slaughter rules.

"The L214 association calls into question the consumption of meat, but it is an ethical, philosophical question which refers each consumer to his responsibility," concludes Sébastien Arsac. We want at least compliance with the regulations to prevent avoidable suffering ”.
