It's the end of long months of mobilization for firefighters. The trade unions of fire professionals announced on Tuesday the end of their strike which began last summer, after several announcements from the Ministry of the Interior in matters of wages and pensions.

These measures were announced by the ministry during a meeting with the unions in the afternoon, as several thousand firefighters marched through Paris to demand government responses to their demands. "The intersyndicale took note of the strong commitments of the ministry and decided to suspend the movement and to call for the end of the strike and to resume work normally from February 1," declared Frédéric AFP Perrin, president of the Spasdis-CFTC union, one of the seven unions (out of nine) mobilized in recent months.

Early retirement and fire bonus

The government has notably committed to revaluing the fire premium to 25% of base salary next summer (compared to 19% currently), and to preserve the mechanisms allowing firefighters to retire early in exchange for additional contributions , said Frédéric Perrin. The increase in the fire premium was confirmed to the press by the Minister of the Interior Christophe Castaner during a trip to the north of Paris.

The strike movement started in June, although it was widely followed by the unions, did not cause any major disruption, the firefighters being required to perform minimum service. Professional firefighters represent 16% of the 247,000 firefighters in France, the rest being volunteers or soldiers.
