The names of “traditional” pets are declining, compared to surnames inspired by gastronomy or pop culture, according to two studies on dog names relayed by Le Parisien .

According to a study conducted by the animals-relax.com site with just over 14,500 dog owners, "Pearl" is the most popular name in 2019 - the year of the "P". "We have been seeing the decline of more traditional names for a few years", however note the authors of the study. "Pearl" is followed by "Pixel", which, according to animaux-relax.com, is "becoming" a classic. And in third place in the ranking ... "Pookie", surely inspired by Aya Nakamura's song released in 2019.

The Lion King inspires

In the rest of the top, we find "Pink", "Prada", "Olaf", "Rocky" ... And "Simba" and "Nala". "In the top 20 of cats and dogs, there are some references to the Lion King : Nala, Pumba or even Simba have been successful and have been accustomed to the top of the ranking for a few years already", write the authors of the study. And the live action adaptation of the Disney cartoon surely helped.

In cats too, moreover, the classics like "Gribouille" or "Minette" are found at the bottom of the ranking. If the top 3 is more neutral than for dogs, there are many “Simba”, “Pépito”, “Pookie” and “Pepsie”.

Game of Thrones and La Casa de Papel

According to Le Parisien , this new trend in animal names is confirmed by another study, carried out by the site rover.com. This was carried out between September and November 2019 on two million names of dogs worldwide, including 25,000 in France.

It highlights names inspired by gastronomy, particularly in France. Thus, the recurrence of "Pepsi" increased by 1000% between 2018 and 2019. "Pepper" (+750%), "Oasis" (+380%) and "Omelette" (200%) follow. But the universe of TV series also inspires a lot of dog owners: "Tyrion" (+ 500%) and "Sansa" (+ 350%) occupy the first two places of the names having experienced the best progression between 2018 and 2019. also finds "Pongo" ( The 101 Dalmatians ), "Khaleesi" ( Game of Thrones ) and "Oslo" ( La Casa de Papel ).
