Narita Airport Expansion Plan `` Implementation is Appropriate '' National Board of Experts January 20 15:58

Regarding expansion plans, including the construction of a new runway at Narita Airport, the National Committee of Experts has commented that the implementation of the plan is appropriate even for enhancing international competitiveness. Going forward, with the approval of the country's construction, the movement to expand the airport will be accelerated.

Following a request from the airport company for the construction of the Narita Airport, including the construction of a third runway, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism requested that an expert committee I was considering.

At a meeting on April 20, airport companies and others estimated that if the plan were to be realized, the economic effect on tourism and related industries could be expected to reach 10.42 trillion yen, nearly twice as much as last year.

Committee members requested that we contribute to regional development around the airport, and that we needed to give due consideration to the natural environment. The Commission's view was that implementation of the plan was appropriate.

In response, the government has decided whether to allow the construction of a new runway.

Tatsuya Hamada, Senior Managing Director of Narita Airport Company, said, "We take the views of the committee very seriously. We want to work on realizing the business based on the fact that creating an airport will lead to community development."
