"My Neighbor Totoro" by Hayao Miyzaki - Studio Ghibli

  • The Ghibli studio became known through the films of its founders, Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.
  • Netflix offers its subscribers to taste their works and those of their followers which will be gradually put online on the platform.
  • Coherent, but varied, the studio catalog allows you to measure and diversify the pleasures.

It is a gift much bigger than the small package that Totoro stretches on the illustration photo that Netflix offers to its French subscribers from February 1. Twenty-one films from the legendary Japanese animation studio Ghibli (yes, that of Hayao Miyazaki) will be posted on the platform for all countries except the United States, Canada, Japan and from China.

How to find yourself in this plethoric offer when you do not know well or not at all the production of this temple of anime (Japanese animation) founded in 1985? How to choose the works to discover first? 20 Minutes helps the neophyte to make his choice even if it must be recognized that Netflix does things well by not releasing all the films at once. You could almost say that the platform chews the work for a very gentle initiation.

With family !

Proposed for the first batch available on February 1, My neighbor Totoro (1988), Porco Rosso (1992) or Kiki la petite sorcière (1989) by Hayao Miyazaki. These magic tales are perfect for a first approach to the master's work. Totoro (our favorite, who has also become the emblem of the studio) will delight spectators from an early age due to his poetry and his absence of villain. The adorable Kiki and the cute aviator Porco Rosso are also among the most accessible heroes of Miyazaki-san. They will be joined by the very childish Ponyo on the cliff (2009), on April 1.

Beautiful adventurers and spellbinding pastels

On March 1, the atmosphere is on an adventure. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), Princess Mononoké (1997) and the Oscar-winning Le Voyage de Chihiro (2001) present strong heroines who have communicated their identity to the studio because they are so emblematic of the universe of Hayao Miyazaki. The co-founder of Ghibli, Isao Takahata, who died in 2018, signs more delicate films with My Neighbors the Yamada (1999) and The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013) enchantments in pastel shades in which this fine scholar describes his country with humor and poetry.

More arduous but so good…

Unless he is definitely resistant to the Ghibli studio, which one could not imagine, the initiated spectator is now ready, on April 1, to dive into marvelous feature films but a little more difficult to access like Le Château ambulant (2004) or Le Vent se lève (2013), in which Hayao Miyazaki wonders about old age and creation. In the same vein as the war film, The Tomb of the Fireflies , Isao Takahata's absolute masterpiece has already been available since December 2019. From the same Takahata-san, we will savor Pompoko (1994), also capable of making payments tears to a pebble as its ecological message is poignant to share the adventures of tanukis (raccoon dogs) threatened by urbanization.

In the footsteps of the masters

It is impossible to compete with Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata but some filmmakers, having often worked as animators in the studio, have nevertheless tried. The Kingdom of cats (2002) by Hiroyuki Morita and Arrietty, the little world of pilferers (2010) and especially the surprising Souvenirs de Marnie by Hiromasa Yonebayashi are worth a detour, while approaching the style of master Miyazaki. The tales of Terremer (2007) and La Colline aux coquelicots by Goro Miyazaki (Hayao-san's own son) and Si tu tends l'oreille (1995) by Yoshifumi Kondo will also delight lovers of Japan.
