A mysterious viral pneumonia is currently affecting China but is starting to spread beyond the borders. The virus was detected in a Japanese patient who stayed in China in early January, the Japanese Ministry of Health announced on Thursday.

A thirties living near Tokyo was hospitalized on January 10 for high fever and other symptoms. He had just returned from a stay in early January in the city of Wuhan, the epicenter of this new disease that has already killed one man in China.

Another sick person in Thailand

The results of analyzes, known this Wednesday, confirmed that he had the new coronavirus which prevails in China. As the illness subsided during the day, he was able to leave the hospital, Japanese officials said. According to information reported by the ministry, "he did not go to the wholesale seafood market" in Wuhan, where most cases have been detected so far. This market was closed on January 1 by local authorities.

The risk of transmission of the virus between humans is "not excluded" but the Chinese health authorities consider it "low". The disease fuels fear of a re-emergence of a SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) virus, which killed 650 people in China and Hong Kong in 2002-2003. This new pneumonia has also been diagnosed in a Chinese woman

In addition, the new pneumonia was diagnosed in a Chinese woman upon arrival in Thailand, said WHO on Tuesday. Nor had she attended the offending market. One of the dozens of patients identified in Wuhan may also have been infected by her husband, the Municipal Hygiene and Health Commission estimated on Wednesday.
