The Cabinet Office decided that Shinichiro Yamamoto of the Imperial Household Agency will retire on the 17th of this month, and that Yasuhiko Nishimura will be appointed as the next Secretary of the Imperial Household Agency.

Deputy Director Nishimura, who is newly appointed as the Secretary of the Interior, is 64 years old. He has served as a chief police officer and a cabinet crisis manager and has been serving as the deputy director of the Imperial Household Agency since September 2016.

Based on the experience of the Deputy Director for over three years, he supported the activities of the Emperor Empress and tackled the challenges facing the new imperial family. It will also be the preparation for the “Ryu of the Emperor” next April, which will be revealed to the public.

Meanwhile, Mr. Yamamoto is 69 years old. He has served as the Secretary of the Cabinet Office and has served as the Deputy Director of the Imperial Household Agency for four years since June 2012, and has served as the Secretary of the Imperial Household Agency for over three years.

During this time, we made every effort to ensure that a series of ceremonies following the succession of the emperor by the first retirement of the Emperor were held without delay.
