It was one of the best kept secrets on public television: how much does RTVE pay for MasterChef? Well, there is no secret or mystery. Maldita.es has managed to find out the million-dollar question after -the parrot- a request for access to information , a claim before the Transparency Council and a judicial process initiated by the public chain.

It is amazing that the accounts of a chain that we pay all Spaniards are almost more protected than the Vatican archives. Why so much fear? Perhaps because citizens know that RTVE paid Shine Iberia, producer of MasterChef , 4,799,542.27 euros for the Masterchef Celebrity 2 edition in 2017, it can put in more than one predicament (or rather put in the trigger) to Public television

He who is not sitting feels. According to data obtained by Maldita.es, TVE paid Shine Iberia , the producer of the program, 479,954 euros for each MasterChef Celebrity 2 program , 489,900 for each broadcast of MasterChef Junior 5 and 371,268 euros for each anonymous MasterChef program in 2017. Surprise!

Wait to see if I can close my eyes that have come out of the basins. 489,900 euros for each of the six programs held by the MasterChef Junior 5 edition; 479,954 for each of the 10 programs that made up MasterChef Celebrity 2; and 371,000 euros for each of the 13 programs of the fifth edition of MasterChef anonymous.

All of them were issued in 2017, so if we take out the calculator and start adding what it cost to the public network that year, all editions of MasterChef leave us the negligible figure of ... 12,565,423 euros. They have sung bingo!

And now two questions arise: the first one, is MasterChef profitable? And the second, do you deserve to pay such amount for the talent? The first one also responded Maldita.es with the RTVE data. It turns out that that year, 2017, TVE's revenues for the three MasterChef they issued amounted to a total of 2,492,494 euros. Do the accounts. 12 million were spent on the format and pocketed two that, according to Maldita.es, come from cultural sponsorships carried out by brands such as Bosch or El Corte Inglés.

Is MasterChef worth it?

I am not an economist, but profitable, what is said to be profitable ... More like a bottomless pit, but I am not a financial advisor. However, the second question is what is key for me in this whole matter of millionaire and grassland contracts for a culinary talent . Worth? What is clear is that although economically MasterChef is not profitable for RTVE , it does provide some audience data that in a public television with a low layer are almost like a miracle.

MasterChef is probably the most watched program of those broadcast on public television, and that, in the bloody battle for the audience is blessed gold. For example, the edition that is being broadcast right now, MasterChef Celebrity 4 is having a screen share that is close to 21% . It is the leading broadcast on Wednesdays and, how could it be otherwise, it is eating competition, which has directly made the decision to not even battle the public.

That is, MasterChef is worth it in terms of audience data. And it is also true and it cannot be denied that, although it is a format that since its birth has not modified practically anything except the march of its presenter, Eva González, to Antena 3, it is a program that it likes. It doesn't matter if all the programs have the same structure and practically the same thing happens, the ability of the producer, Shine Iberia , to make the repetitive interesting is one of her greatest achievements.

And works. It works because RTVE has known, on the one hand, to fit it into a time slot where it does not have to battle with GH , or with Survivors , or with La Voz , or with any series that can shade it. It works because if it slacks in terms of content, judges and applicants know how to lift it. It works because it is a program that combines cooking, celebrities, children and, of course - although Rosa María Mateo refuses - the essence of a reality . What noses! It is a reality .

Although celebrities do not cloistered in MasterChef's house to record the show, the anonymous do. Three months in a small house where they live, study and put the batteries. It is true that the program emits absolutely nothing from that coexistence, but it is true that coexistence influences the development of the program and much. In the last edition of the MasterChef of anonymous it was more than evident that the friction of the friction of the anonymous both in coexistence and talent marked the entire edition. That is, MasterChef tries to give a reality that fits the public chain, but in reality it pulls the same as others.

Of course, with many more quality. No one can deny that each MasterChef program has an abysmal production job. The exteriors, the kitchens, the recordings, the decorations ... and still adding. That this does not justify the millions that RTVE pays for the program, no, but it does explain the undeniable quality of a producer. Can you imagine that RTVE will pay that money for a poorly crafted program? At least, what you pay is good.

Another thing is that as an audience and as last payers of public television it can be defended that such amounts be paid for a program that makes the public network profitable only 16% of the total spent.

The data of Maldita.es will fall like a jug of cold water on the audience and on the citizen and, perhaps, the time has come to ask if we want a public television that entertains us and that does it with quality, but with a cost until embarrassing, or we want to pull sales and have an austere public television, but unable to stay in audience because there is nothing worthwhile .
