Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of misperception in France in people over 50 years old. An application now allows better control.

A new innovation brings hope to patients with "age-related" degeneration of AMD. This is the first cause of malaise in France among over 50s. More than one million French people are affected. Doctors have designed an application, Odysight, which allows to follow in a fun way the evolution of the disease.

Specifically, it takes the form of a game, a kind of puzzle, on mobile or tablet. To earn points, you have to participate, every three or four days, in a visual test that lasts a little less than a minute. It is sufficient for the user to slide his finger towards a letter on the screen.

And if the result is bad, an e-mail is sent to the ophthalmologist and the patient to arrange an appointment.

Soon a reimbursement of Health Insurance?

"This allows, between two consultations, to have checkpoints, knowing that the treatments and protocols today tend to space visits. This application allows to maintain a link", details on Europe 1 the Dr. Jean-François Girmens, ophthalmologist at the 15-20 hospital in Paris, who insists that this does not replace the doctor.

For the moment, not everyone has access to this application since only about forty ophthalmic centers in France can prescribe it, giving a code of access to the patient. But discussions are underway for a possible reimbursement by the Health Insurance. This would monitor many more patients with AMD.
