• Mobilization: The climate activism of the young Greta Thunberg lands in New York:
  • Expedition. The 'ecoheroine' odyssey Greta Thunberg

Millions of people around the world will participate since Friday in the climate strikes that have been convened throughout the planet on September 20 and 27 and in the activities of the intermediate days, which will coincide with the celebration in New York (United States) of the Climate Summit convened by the United Nations to boost ambition in the negotiations of the next Climate Conference to be held at the end of the year in Chile.

The mobilizations are on their way to becoming the greatest climate mobilization in history and Fridays for Future already has a list of more than 5,225 events in 156 countries that will take place from September 20 to 27, and more are added every day.

In addition to young people, adults will join young people and, in fact, the 350.org platform estimates that more than 73 unions; 820 organizations; 2,500 companies have already expressed their support for strikes and, up to 6,323 websites will conduct a digital climate strike.

The young Swedish woman who inspired the Fridays For Future movement, Greta Thunberg, who traveled from Europe to America on the zero-emission Malizia sailboat, owned by the Prince of Monaco, Pierre Casiraghi, will participate in the New York march. It is precisely expected that New York will be one of the most massive climatic marches.

Students in the street

In fact, the city mayor has given permission to 1.1 million public school students to miss classes and attend strikes, where Thunberg will be one of the speakers along with many other youth activists.

Strikers will meet in different American cities, where in total about 600 events have been organized throughout the week.

Also, during the UN Climate Action Summit on September 23, activists in Washington DC plan to paralyze the city by blocking key infrastructure.

Globally, the International Trade Union Confederation supports strikes just like its European arm. For example, the United Kingdom Congress of Trade Unions has asked its 5 million members to support the strikes and the Irish union Fórsa has asked its 80,000 members to join. Meanwhile, in Italy, the largest union, the CGIL that has more than five million members, will hold assemblies in the workplace on September 27 and the South African trade union federation with 800,000 members will join the strike.

On the other hand, more than 600 medical professionals have signed a medical leave justification to excuse the students of the class, due to the adverse effects of climate change on health.

At Amazon's headquarters in Seattle, more than 900 employees will leave on Friday due to the lack of climate action from their employers and Google and Microsoft workers will also join the strikes.

Mobilizations in Spain

At a domestic level, in Spain, the strike, supported by the Alliance for Climate has the support of more than 300 organizations and Fridays For Future has called 179 strikes throughout the country.

FFF Madrid activist María Laín, who will participate in the youth summit to be held in New York on Saturday, stressed that the Climate Summit for Youth will be "a historic moment" in which hundreds of young people from all over the world will gather to seek solutions to the climate crisis and demand politicians to act.

" We young people know that Spain will be one of the European countries most affected by this crisis and that is why we have manifested throughout the year . The world strike on September 27 will be the highlight of our protests , and I would like both young and old join our cause. Whoever the climate crisis affects you, and you are part of the solution, "he said. In addition, Fridays for Future youth plans to have a vegan picnic in the Retiro park around 2:30 pm, followed by a banner workshop.

Specifically, from the Youth for Climate organization they have indicated that throughout the week there will be different actions throughout the country from workshops, banners, information points, among other activities. Mothers have also joined the Mothers for Climate whose objective is to raise awareness about the climate crisis and continue to exert pressure to take strong measures to protect the planet.
