The Handmaid's Story was published in 1985 and has both captivated and terrified Margaret Atwood's audience, perhaps because the reality that Atwood embodies is closer to us than we think.

- She has said herself that there is nothing in these novels that has not already happened anywhere in the world. She balances between dystopia and realism and I think that's why you become so involved in her universe, says Culture News literary critic Ulrika Milles.
