About 40% of domestic shipping companies “It is difficult to secure seafarers.

According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, about 40% of the companies that operate cargo ships in Japan are called “coast ships,” and it is difficult to secure crew members. In the transportation industry, not only the trucks with the highest handling volume but also the second ship has highlighted the fact that the shortage of workers is becoming more serious.

This survey was conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in 2016 targeting 3040 operators of domestic shipping vessels nationwide, and 906 operators have responded so far.

According to that, 330 operators answered that it was difficult to secure seafarers, accounting for 36.5% of the total.

In addition, more than half of the seafarers working on coastal ships are over 50 years old, 12 points higher than the average of all industries, and the aging is progressing significantly.

“Inland shipping” is a shipping company that operates cargo ships in Japan and accounts for about 43% of the domestic cargo transportation volume. In addition to the top handling truck in the transportation industry, the second ship is not enough. The actual situation is becoming more serious.

Therefore, in June, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism established a new committee with business operators and experts to discuss discussions on how sailors work and the industry structure, and to gather opinions from industry groups in the future. Above, we will take measures to review the business environment of coastal vessels from the ground up.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism says, “The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism wants to consider effective measures to ensure that the domestic shipping industry, which is the main artery of logistics, can stably survive.”
