Onions ... we love and hate them equally. It is versatile and tasty, but it can lose its taste if stored incorrectly, and of course there is the eternal problem that it makes us cry.

The Federal Nutrition Center in Germany said that to get the best results from onions should be kept in a cool and dry place and in this way will remain good for months.

It should not be placed in the refrigerator, and not stored in plastic bags or cans. If the onion is still edible, it must have a dry outer layer that rattles when touched.

The big question about onions is, of course, how to cut them without crying. When the cells are cut, the enzyme is released. This converts the odorless soft to alicin, an acid that irritates the mucous membranes, which in turn stimulates tears. This can be reduced by using an extremely sharp knife so that fewer cells are damaged.

The knife, cutting board and onion can also be submerged briefly in cold water before starting. It can also be submerged in a deep bowl filled with water during peeling and cutting.
