Sony owns the right to film adaptations of the fast-moving superhero. But after an agreement in 2015, the companies agreed to split on him. As a result, he has been a part of Marvel's film universe ever since, and has been a recurring character in several films, not least the latest "Avengers" films, and some other Marvel characters have appeared in Sony's latest two "Spider-man" films.

But the financial negotiations between the companies are reported to have broken down, which means that Spider-Man's future in upcoming Marvel movies is unclear. It also means that producer Kevin Feige, who is described as important to the success of the two recent "Spider-man" films, can no longer produce for Sony.

The latest movie "Spider-man: Far from home" is Sony's most revenue-generating cinema to date, while "Avengers: Endgame", in which the same spider man participates, is the most economically successful movie in cinema ever.
