“Yuri Gavrilovich was an outstanding Soviet and Russian geographer and geomorphologist. His area of interest included regional, applied, historical, methodological aspects of geography, dynamic and regional geomorphology, morphometric analysis of terrain, geomorphological mapping, geoinformatics, geographical forecasting, ”the statement said.
It is noted that during the years of World War II he served in the ranks of the Soviet army and defended his homeland as part of the Western, 2nd Belorussian, and 3rd Baltic fronts.
Simonov is the author of hundreds of scientific papers and 14 lecture courses. One of the results of his painstaking work in recent years was the three-volume work “History of Geography at Moscow University.”
