This is about what will ultimately be a ban on the import of Russian nuclear fuel into the United States and the restoration of our own [nuclear] fuel industry to ensure the growth of our nuclear industry, as well as to make a disconnect in terms of Russian supplies,” the TASS official quotes.
Payette cited the example of how Europe “successfully decoupled Russian gas, oil and coal supplies.”
The administration of American President Joe Biden previously admitted that US dependence on Russian nuclear fuel poses a critical threat to national security. Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Katherine Huff noted that about 20% of the fuel used by US nuclear reactors is imported under contracts with Russian suppliers.
