The new coronary pneumonia epidemic has caused great impact on my country's economy and society, but the epidemic has not delayed the independent innovation of Chinese enterprises. On the 9th, the data released by the State Intellectual Property Office's third quarter regular press conference showed that in the first half of the year, China's domestic patent and trademark applications achieved double growth year-on-year. With rapid progress, the main intellectual property indicators were in line with expectations, and the development of the intellectual property industry remained stable.

Double growth in domestic patent and trademark applications

Hu Wenhui, a spokesman for the State Intellectual Property Office, said that in the first half of this year, there were 2.195 million patent applications and 4.17 million trademark applications in my country. The number of domestic patent and trademark applications achieved double year-on-year growth. Affected by the epidemic situation, the number of domestic applications dropped significantly in February, but then recovered quickly and continued to climb. The current monthly growth rate has exceeded the pre-epidemic level.

Specifically, in the first half of 2020, there were 683,000 invention patent applications in my country, and a total of 217,000 invention patents were authorized; there were 4.284 million trademark applications in my country and 2.629 million trademark registrations. As of the end of June 2020, the effective number of invention patents in my country (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) was 1.96 million, and the number of invention patents per 10,000 population reached 14.3; the number of effective registered trademarks in my country was 27.414 million.

From the perspective of the layout of international applications, in the first half of the year, Chinese applicants submitted 26,800 PCT international patent applications to the State Intellectual Property Office, an increase of 20.7% year-on-year; 3875 applications for international registration of trademarks in Madrid, an increase of 36% year-on-year.

"This shows that in the face of the changes in the situation brought about by the impact of the epidemic, Chinese companies still have confidence in the prospects of foreign markets, insist on actively exploring the international market with enhanced intellectual property protection, and promote'going out' in a stable and orderly manner." State Intellectual Property Office Strategy Ge Shu, Director of the Planning Department, believes that the current application of intellectual property rights in China is based on the domestic market and continues to expand the international market. The development trend is good, which is conducive to supporting innovation to drive high-quality economic development and promoting the development of an export-oriented economy.

The status of enterprise innovation subject is continuously consolidated

"Domestic companies have continuously consolidated their main position in patent applications." Hu Wenhui said that in the first half of the year, there were 229,000 domestic companies applying for patents, an increase of 32,000 compared with the same period of the previous year; domestic companies submitted a total of 404,000 invention patent applications. A year-on-year increase of 12%.

In the first half of the year, the top 3 domestic companies (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) granted the number of invention patents in order: Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (2772), OPPO Guangdong Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. (1925), BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. (1432 Pieces).

At the same time, the benefits of using intellectual property rights continued to increase. In the first half of the year, the national patent and trademark pledge deposit amount was 85.3 billion yuan, an increase of 45% year-on-year, and the number of pledged projects was 4,678, an increase of 52% year-on-year. Among them, the amount of patent pledge deposits was 65.1 billion yuan, an increase of 61%, the number of pledged projects was 4171, an increase of 54%; the total amount of trademark pledges was 20.2 billion, an increase of 8.8%, and the number of pledged projects was 507, an increase of 34%. Intellectual property is changing from invisible intangible assets to tangible capital for enterprise development.

With the rapid development of my country's integrated circuit industry, the awareness and ability of intellectual property rights protection of related companies have generally increased, and more and more innovative entities have used the integrated circuit layout design protection system to protect their innovation achievements. In the first half of 2020, my country registered 5,176 applications for layout design registration of integrated circuits, a year-on-year increase of 78.2%. The number of companies submitting applications for registration reached 2,195, which was 2.1 times the same period last year. Ge Shu said that with the continuous improvement of the level of innovation in my country's integrated circuit industry, it is expected that applications for integrated circuit layout design will continue to maintain rapid growth.

The healthy development of the intellectual property service industry is an important prerequisite for better protection of intellectual property. In May this year, the State Intellectual Property Office issued the "Notice on Deepening the "Blue Sky" Action to Promote the Healthy Development of the Intellectual Property Service Industry", further focusing on key points, intensifying efforts, and innovating mechanisms. Lei Xiaoyun, director of the Application Promotion Department of the State Intellectual Property Office, said that in the next step, it will further strengthen overall planning, implement responsibilities, and strengthen execution, continue to improve the governance capacity and governance level in the field of intellectual property agency, and create a favorable industry development environment.
