The coronavirus crisis and measures to deal with the pandemic have claimed up to 833,979 jobs last March, according to data from Social Security affiliations presented this morning by the Government. The figure is the difference between the workers registered in the system on the last day of last February (18,445,436) and those who followed last Tuesday, March 31 (18,445,436). The worst day of the month was on the 16th, two after the decree of the state of alarm, when more than 182,000 jobs were cut from the system.
In terms of registered unemployment, the Ministry of Labor has recorded an increase of 302,000 people. It is the largest increase in the statistical series and exceeds the 200,000 increase that occurred in January 2009, which until now was listed as the blackest in the history of the Spanish labor market.
