Telecommuting can be a lot of stress if you don't set yourself a frame. - IStock / City Presse

For a long time democratized abroad, telework has struggled to find a place in France, where most companies swear by extreme presenteeism. Conversely, this form of organization allows an employee who could work within the offices of his company to do so rather from home thanks to a computer and an internet connection.

Convinced of its relevance, the legislator has also decided to give it a boost by making its implementation methods more flexible in 2017. A well-inspired system in view of the exceptional measures that would be taken three years later to slow down the coronavirus epidemic ...

Between psychosocial benefits and risks

If the teleworker is a worker like the others, enjoying all the usual rights, he is in fact supposed to benefit from a better environment to carry out his tasks. As highlighted by the benchmark platform in the field Teletravailler.fr, this practice increases productivity by saving travel time, reducing absenteeism, finding a better balance between professional and family life or still gain serenity in his work. But it is still necessary for this that all the conditions are met.

The psychosocial risks linked to this functioning should not be underestimated. At the top of the list, this nomadism leads some to be permanently connected, even outside their actual working time, in order to prove to their boss that they are not flankers. An obvious corollary, the reduction of the boundaries between professional and personal can impact the family sphere. Similarly, a telework employee can quickly feel isolated and rejected compared to his colleagues, while undergoing stress due to the lack of contact with his hierarchy. This is also the reason why, in a normal context, this method of organization is generally limited to one or two days per week.

Good reflexes

To avoid these pitfalls, it is essential to adopt good telecommuting habits. It is imperative to be able to create a real space dedicated to your professional activity. The ideal is obviously to have a closed room, in which you will not be disturbed by the washing machine or by children. Otherwise, set at least rules with your loved ones and define your office area using the available furniture.

In teleworking, we also tend to forget to stretch our legs. It is however essential to your health. Take breaks and take the opportunity to do some stretching and breathe some fresh air out the window. To avoid being overwhelmed by your work, you must also set schedules with a start and end of the day, avoiding any source of distraction in the meantime. If your company has remote pointing software, it's even simpler: once your hours are up, shut down your computer.

A supervised implementation

In principle, teleworking must be the subject of a collective agreement, a charter drawn up by the employer or an individual agreement with the employee. A sine qua non condition for its implementation: it must be voluntary.

However, the state has provided an exception in which this mode of operation can be imposed on employees. Since the 2017 reform, article L1222-11 of the Labor Code thus provides that “in exceptional circumstances, in particular the threat of an epidemic, or in the event of force majeure, the implementation of telework can be considered as an adaptation of the work station made necessary to allow the continuity of the activity of the company and guarantee the protection of the employees ”.

To protect their employees, several companies therefore resorted to it from the start of the coronavirus epidemic, before it was massively generalized by containment measures.
