Medef president Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux spoke in favor of the nationalization of companies in difficulty due to the coronavirus crisis. He notably cited the example of Air France.

The president of Medef Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux said Monday favorable to the nationalization of French companies put in great difficulty by the impact of the coronavirus. Asked about France info on the opportunity for the state to take such a decision, the boss of Medef replied "of course. We must not have taboos on the matter". "The state will indeed have to be there if necessary to come to the aid of businesses which are in a very difficult financial situation," he added.

"We are facing a completely unique phenomenon. It is not a financial crisis as we experienced in 2008", he added, citing in particular the example of Air France, which "has no turnover, or almost no more", currently. "It is legitimate for the French state (...) to come to its rescue," said Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux.

"This crisis will create a recession effect"

More generally, the president of the employers' organization estimated that after this crisis, companies would need support to strengthen their equity. "Companies will come out of this crisis very indebted. This debt will have to be repaid," he said, calling for "capital credits" repayable over 10 or 20 years "so as to give to business leaders enough time to restart the machine and start growing again. "

This aid can "probably" only come from the state, he added. "This crisis will inevitably create a recession effect. (...) The important thing is already to think about the recovery plan and how to quickly restart our productive tool," he insisted.
