In early July 2018, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia and the President of Eritrea met to hold peace talks.

On July 9, 2018, Ethiopia and Eritrea signed a joint declaration on peace and friendship, which marked the end of the war between the two countries.

The border between the two countries became open for transport, Ethiopian Airlines launched daily direct flights from Addis Ababa to Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, after a 20-year hiatus.
