• Antivirus The Government against the corpse of McAfee: the odyssey to seize his fortune after his death in a Catalan prison
  • Janice 646 days 'trapped in Spain' without being able to bury the body of her husband, the creator of the most famous antivirus

The Court of Barcelona has confirmed the file of the cause of the death of John McAfee, founder of the antivirus that bears his name, which occurred in June 2021 in the Brians 2 prison in Sant Esteve de Sesrovires (Barcelona), concluding that it was a suicide and that "there are no indications" that point to "anything different".

In a car, the ninth section of the Court of Barcelona has endorsed in this way the file of the case previously issued by the Court of Instruction of Martorell (Barcelona) in February 2022 and that the family had appealed, and refuses to continue investigating the death of McAfee at 75 years of age, which occurred after learning that he was going to be extradited to the United States for tax fraud.

John McAfee, the creator of the antivirus, is found dead in his cell in a Barcelona prison after the AN ordered his extradition

McAfee was arrested in October 2020 at Barcelona's El Prat Airport as he was about to catch a flight to Istanbul and has been in pre-trial detention ever since.

During the extradition hearing, the businessman, whose tax debt in the United States amounted to more than four million dollars, claimed to have paid "millions of dollars in taxes" and said he was the victim of political persecution for having denounced corruption in the tax agency.

On June 23, 2021, he was found dead in his cell, the same day that the National Court announced its decision to extradite him to the United States for alleged tax evasion.

For the Court of Barcelona, all the reports presented – such as the forensic result of the autopsy, the police report, photographs of the body or the recordings of the prison itself on the day of the events that confirm that he had no contact with another inmate – agree that "there is no indication of anything other than a death of suicidal origin".

In its resolution, which is final and against which there is no appeal, the Audiencia de Barcelona thus adds that the case had already been archived as there were no "indications of the perpetration" of a crime in the death of the founder of the famous antivirus.

For the Court of Barcelona, numerous investigative measures have already been carried out, "all essential and all conclusive" as to support that it was a suicide, so it rules out the opening of new proceedings as requested by the family in its appeal and confirms the dismissal of the case.

"It seems to us repetitive, useless and therefore impertinent and not necessary because it is not essential," the opening of new proceedings, says the Court in its car, and also points out that the family's appeal does not argue enough why complementary evidence or provides "any element that raises another possibility" other than suicide.
