UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned of the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) and called for the establishment of a regulatory authority. "The alarm bells about the latest form of artificial intelligence are deafening," Guterres said at a press conference in New York on Monday. "Scientists and experts have called the world to action, declaring AI an existential threat to humanity, similar to a nuclear war. We must take these warnings seriously."
Guterres also presented a position paper in which the United Nations makes proposals on how to deal with AI globally and announced the establishment of a high-level advisory body on the topic.
In addition, he supports the establishment of a regulatory authority, which, however, could not be created by him alone, but only by the member states of the UN, said Guterres. Such an agency could be "inspired by what the International Atomic Energy Agency is today."
