They should be safe, good for the child's back, easy to use and contain no toxic substances: The ADAC has taken a closer look at 20 child seats based on these criteria and comes to a largely positive conclusion. Only one of the tested models is advised against by the automobile club.

As the ADAC announced on Tuesday in Munich, eleven of the tested models from this year achieved the grade "good", eight received the rating "satisfactory". The safety, operation and ergonomics as well as the pollutant content of infant carriers, toddler seats and seats for older children were tested.

Only the Besafe iZi Twist M model failed completely: The testers found naphthalene in its upholstery fabric, which is suspected of being carcinogenic.

The ADAC describes the test result as a success of previous product tests. The manufacturers have improved many of the features criticized in the past and are continuously developing the seats based on current safety standards.

These are the test winners

According to the ADAC, the test winner among the infant car seats is the Joie i-Snug 2 + i-Base Advance. When it comes to toddler seats, the Joie i-Harbour achieves the best score with the i-Base Encore. The test winner of the seats for older children, in which the children are strapped in with the car seat belt, is the Cybex Solution G-Fix. All results can be found on the ADAC website.

As a rule, child seats with the Isofix mount embedded in the car seats offer the best safety. Almost all new child seat models are equipped with it. From September 2023, a ban on the sale of child seats with the older UN Reg.44 standard will gradually come into force in the EU. From this date, such products may no longer be manufactured or imported. Existing seats may continue to be used.
