• Google Pixel 7a technology, Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet, the new devices for an Android 14 that will be more personal

The Mountain View company took advantage of Google I/O, its annual developer conference, to renew one of its most affordable ranges of smartphones, the 'a'. Specifically, of all the devices the smartphone they presented, the only one that for now will arrive in Spain is the Pixel 7a. In PIXEL we have tested it for two weeks and as a first positive point, it has nothing to envy to its older brothers, Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, being its second asset the price, which is around 500 euros.

This new terminal, already available on the Google website at 509 euros, further dilutes the border between mid-range and high-end, at least as far as Google terminals are concerned. It is true that the Pixel 7a is the most expensive model of the A series, but the main reason is that it inherits much of the features of the Pixel 7. For example, it has an OLED screen (6.1 inches and 1,080 x 2,400 pixels) with a higher refresh rate, specifically 90Hz, as in the Pixel 7, giving it greater fluidity. In fact, this is adaptive and selectable from the settings, being able to choose the one that adapts to the content it plays.

The truth is that this screen looks better than its predecessors, brighter and more vibrant. The secret is in the correct saturation and color temperature thanks to gOLED technology, with a contrast that is at the height of the best Samsung screens, with a fingerprint reader under the panel. Fast and adjustable in case you are using a screen protector. A security system that joins another that is new in the range, the face unlock. It also has an IP67 rating for solid resistance to dust and water, something unusual in the mid-ranges.

As for the brain, Pixel 7a features a custom Google chipset, the Tensor G2, just as new as the Pixel 7, backed by three years of OS updates and five years of security updates, starting with Android 13. Despite having more than a year and a half, it moves demanding games quite fluidly, so this terminal also serves for the most gamer public.

Another point to assess this terminal and all Pixel in general is its camera. It can take pictures with up to 64 megapixels, a record in the series, an increase that is noticeable from the first photograph. Being able to capture in detail any element, completely defined. You can photograph every pore of skin and imperfection in almost full-length photos. You don't even lose sharpness using auto HDR. It also maintains one of those things that caught the attention of photographers and above all, content creators, tracking people and moving objects thanks to AI.

This artificial intelligence is to capture and focus on the point marked on the screen and maintain focus, despite the movement, both in photos and video. Less spectacular is the wide angle, of lower resolution, which due to its characteristics deforms the sides and loses definition, especially in situations where the light is not the best.

The portrait mode is still his forte, as is the night mode, capable of taking colors in the middle of the night, imperceptible to the naked eye. It includes new modes such as long exposure, perfect for central photographs of Madrid and Raw photos, although with resolution limitations. A but that adds to the hybrid Zoom.

The front camera with a 13 Megapixel sensor is enough to take very defined selfies (sometimes too much, so much so that it makes you rethink who wants selfies in which you see every pore, every hair and every grain), with wide-angle option as well. The main camera shoots up to 4K/60p, being able to create sharp videos with great stabilization. At the software level applied to photographs, it has options such as automatically deleting people who come out from behind in the photographs.

Regarding the previous terminals of the 'a' range, it adds RAM and 7.5 W wireless charging, in addition to a more robust aesthetic that disguises it as a high-end. It has a battery that will give for a day and a little more, thanks to its 4385 mAh. Although Google says it can last up to 72 hours, this is with the extreme power saving setting enabled, of course.

The Pixel 7a is an excellent terminal even for those who would like to spend about 300 euros more on the Pixel 7 Pro, it more than meets and at a very tight price. Aesthetically it also looks as if it were a high-end, although perhaps too heavy and without the detail of including a charger in the box, but it has, it must be said, with a good grip.
