While the student suspected of having stabbed his Spanish teacher in a high school in Saint-Jean-de-Luz was taken into custody on Wednesday, investigators are trying to understand his gesture by looking into his psychiatric history.

The teenager should be indicted and could be placed in pre-trial detention despite his minority.

Why such a gesture?

On Wednesday, a Spanish teacher from a private high school in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, was fatally stabbed in her class by a student.

The Bayonne prosecutor considered that there was premeditation, which explains why an investigation for assassination was opened.

The teenager's custody, which began on Wednesday, should end this Thursday at the end of the morning or be extended for a further 24 hours.

Mention very well in the patent of the colleges

By looking more specifically at his psychiatric history, the investigators are trying to understand the suspect's gesture.

His first statements are disturbing: he would have indicated having heard voices the night before his act while specifying to be "possessed".

Voices that would have asked him to kill his Spanish teacher.

According to initial information, the student would suffer from psychological disorders and was being followed for depression.

On the other hand, this does not affect his academic results since he obtained his college certificate last year with honors.

On Wednesday, a doctor examined him and found that his state of health was compatible with police custody.

But this does not prejudge his criminal liability.

Was the student in full possession of his faculties during the action?

The instruction will have to determine it.

Psychological and psychiatric expertise will be carried out.

The teenager should in any case be indicted and could be placed in pre-trial detention despite his minority.
